Miklós Bély, Ágnes Apáthy

Clinical Pathology of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Cause of Death, Lethal Complications and Associated Diseases in Rheumatoid Arthritis

In this monograph Miklós Bély a pathologist, and Ágnes Apáthy a rheumatologist and neurologist, describe and analyze the pathological features of major complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and the most frequent diseases associated with it.

RA is an important challenge to rheumatologists in today's ageing population.  Knowledge of the complications of RA, such as systemic vasculitis, AA amyloidosis, lethal septic infection, and associated diseases (atherosclerosis, tuberculosis and malignancies) is important for all physicians who are faced with this disease.

Interactions of coexisting complications and associated diseases modify the characteristic symptoms of RA or of its associated diseases.  These changes may lead to errors or late recognition of complications.

A separate chapter presents and discusses the most important forms of amyloidosis, using a variety of simple microscopic techniques.

This monograph is based on the extensive experience of the authors and is an important contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of RA.
